Getting Ready

January – June, 2023

For many months we planned which places we would visit and in what order, considering the weather and the route. We planned to drive to all our destinations in the continental U.S. and Canada, so everything we would need for a year would have to fit into one car. Since we were going to stay either with friends, family, or in Airbnb’s, we wouldn’t need to bring a lot of extras like kitchen utensils or towels, and to reduce the amount of clothes needed, we planned to go north first during the summer months and then swing south for the winter – no heavy coats needed!

The last few months were hectic, between dentist and doctor visits, buying a new, larger car and selling our existing sedans, and performing in the spring show with the Alexandria Singers. We said our “see you in a year” goodbyes to friends and coworkers, as well as to our kitty, Tribble, who went to stay with our friend Kadira and her kitty Pita. Then of course came the exhausting process of moving: everything in our apartment needed either to go into a storage unit or to donation.

Preparations

Uh-oh, something's going on...
Meet Bluebelle! She's getting us across the country!
One final Alexandria Singers show before we go!
Last dinner at the Kimchi House on Route 1

Moving day

Finally, the final moving day came – June 18th. Originally the plan was to stay the final night in Northern Virginia in a hotel near our apartment. After moving all our stuff to the storage unit and then cleaning the entire apartment we expected to be completely exhausted; instead we found ourselves excited and exhilarated. So when Mays said to me, Why don’t we just leave now?” (now being 8:30 PM) I said, “Okay, let’s go!” Those of you who know either of us will know just how incredibly out of character this is!

One day to go...lots of packing left to do
Playing Tetris trying to get everything into the storage unit!
It's all done and cleaned!
We're on our way!
